Description
A ‘Designated Involuntary Termination Approver’ can ensure consistent compliance with policy and the law. The referenced memo is necessary to memorialize actions taken in that role. Duties of that role:
- Pre-review all involuntary terminations, prior to the action.
- Either approve presented involuntary terminations, or provide counsel to management as to what is required to obtain support for that action.
Who should be a ‘Designated Involuntary Termination Approver’
- This can be an additional duty to an existing position.
- Not necessarily an Attorney – appointed individual should be A. Familiar with employment law, B. Have a reputation for consistency, C. Be comfortable in counseling others that may have a higher title, and D. Be capable of pushing back as needed.
This is not theory. Our President, Mark Clark, designed a Coaching, Counseling, and Corrective Action system for an $8B manufacturer with this as a key comp0nent. Upon leaving that employer, he further refined the process. First implemented in 2014, use of this process resulted in a reduction in legal challenges by 30 percent and unjustified unemployment claims dropping by 74 percent (over a measured 5-year period).
A Best Practices initiative. This is one of 21 documents provided to participants of KeystoneHR’s Coaching, Counseling, and Corrective Action Training System.
