Onboarding Supervisors, Managers, and Leaders

I once reported to a CHRO that asked my opinion of the first staff meeting of his I attended.  I liked it – but remarked one-and-a-half hours seemed too long for a routine weekly meeting.  He bristled and responded – “I don’t think it was any longer than it had to be.”  Well, of course that depends, but in general most anything is subject to improvement.  Except of course, the length of that CHRO’s meeting.  Now on to something that can be improved on.

Consider the selection and onboarding process for new Supervisors, Managers, and Leadership.  For most of us, simply identifying, interviewing, and selecting members if this group can be a lengthy process by itself.  Even if your new management representative is an internal promotion – does he/she know enough about policy to keep themselves, the company, and you out or trouble? 

Issues such as how he/she might handle an Antitrust issue may cause you to lose sleep.   How about if OSHA shows up for that unannounced inspection?  Do those in charge know what the process is, or who to call?  How about the union blowing in with a stack of membership cards they claim are already signed?  Does the next act by your second shift manager automatically certify the union, or does the/she know what to do?
